1st Credit is a debt purchasing company that has purchased the debt account from the original lending source (or in some cases an intermediary or third party) for a fraction of the original value and is shamelessly trying to get the full sum of the original account from you.

1st Credit will use all sorts of nasty methods to get you to set up a standing order or direct debit so that they can make a quick profit. You may already have had bad dealings with them on the phone. They may phone you up when they know it is inconvenient for you and do this lots of times. They may write you official appearing sternly worded letters threatening to send someone round and collect the full amount or take you to court for the full amount. Other strategies may include attempting an order for sale charge on your property or make you homeless.

So ask 1st Credit for a copy of the original contract when you took out your loan or credit card.

I've been through hell with 1st Credit Limited as they tried to force me to pay a statute barred debt.

The Company registered address is Hill House, 1 Little New Street, London, EC4A 3TR, but be careful it is not the only 1st Credit at that address. The directors have been busy making other companies to handle funding, claims, etc.

They are a big debt collection agency that buy debts from other companies (especially banks and credit cards). By the time 1st Credit phone you they own the debt - you cannot contact the original creditor. They are specialists in enforcing debts that are difficult to enforce (usually impossible).


In February 1st Credit were severely reprimanded by the Office of Fair Trading for heavy handed practices.

OFT imposes requirements on 1st Credit over debt collection practices

The OFT has taken action against 1st Credit Ltd requiring the company to improve its debt collection practices.

The OFT has imposed 'requirements' on 1st Credit using consumer credit powers, after an investigation found that some of its business processes and procedures failed to meet satisfactory standards. As a result, 1st Credit Ltd and its associated companies must:

* refrain from issuing statutory demands warning of bankruptcy where it is unlikely that proceedings will be initiated
* not discuss legal action with consumers unless it is likely that such action will be taken
* ensure that sensitive cases involving vulnerable individuals, for example those with mental health or medical problems, are dealt with appropriately, and
* ensure that all matters of concern raised with them by the free advice sector and other third parties are dealt with appropriately.
